Aim

Keep fasting blood sugar between 2.8 mmol/litre and 6.1 mmol/litre
Keep HbA1c below or equal to 7.0%
Monitor HBA1c every 6 months
I Lifestyle
Education about the condition, diet and complications
Exercise: regular aerobic exercise

2 Monitor and control hypertension and lipids

First line:
Lifestyle changes and address other risk factors for six months
If lifestyle changes have not been successful and there is no renal or cardiac
dysfunction
Second line: Metformin and/or Sulphonylures
If BMI > 25, Metformin
Third line: Add second drug in the other class
Poor renal function: Use thiazolidinedione or Insulin instead of metformin as second line agent
Fourth line: Add Insulin

Monitor HbA1c every six months
