With elite sport gaining momentum in the wake of the national lockdown, Bestmed and the Golden Lions Rugby Union are pleased to announce an exciting new partnership which will provide a boost to one of the strongest unions in South African rugby.

South Africa's largest self-administered medical scheme will support the Lions’ referees via a partnership that will extend into the 2023 season, as the GLRU continues its quest to cement its place at the highest level of one of SA’s most competitive sports.

This partnership, between two brands which are focused on community support, guidance and engagement, includes full support from Bestmed as title sponsors of GLRU referees.

“Our referees play an integral role in our sport, ensuring fair play, and we are really pleased that our on-field officials will have the support of Bestmed this year. This is a fantastic partnership which can help our union take another step forward as we go from strength to strength,” said GLRU CEO Rudolf Straeuli.

With a proven track record of 57 years providing medical aid, Bestmed has strong support in the Johannesburg and Gauteng communities, providing an ideal partnership with the 133-year-old GLRU, which has a rich history of rugby development and excellence.

According to Bestmed CEO Leo Dlamini, backing a sport that is loved by many South Africans makes sense for the healthcare brand.

“Refereeing is a great vehicle for brand visibility, and this partnership gives us an opportunity to further entrench ourselves in local communities where we can make a difference,” Dlamini said.

Pro Legoete, a prolific winner of the GLRU Referee of the Year award, says it is crucial for referees to receive backing from stakeholders of the game in order to ensure the integrity of local rugby is maintained.

“This sort of partnership guarantees that all facets of the sport are able to thrive and grow, and with Bestmed’s involvement, the world-class standard of refereeing at the GLRU can improve even further,” Legoete said.

Working together, Bestmed and the GLRU are confident we will continue growing and succeeding, both on and off the field, and we are looking forward to a long and fruitful partnership.
