Many men only pay attention to their health when something feels wrong, but prevention starts long before symptoms appear. Taking care of your body, every day is one of the most important ways to support both physical and mental wellbeing. During Men’s Mental Health Month, we often focus on the mind as a key part of overall health. It is ok to not be ok. The stigma surrounding men’s mental illness has been described as having wide-reaching and profound consequences and negatively impacts men’s help-seeking for mental health[IC1.1].
Mental health is important and should be managed and monitored regularly. However, mental wellbeing is closely connected to physical health. Poor sleep, unhealthy eating habits, lack of movement, and unmanaged stress can affect your mood, focus, energy levels, and overall quality of life. We often forget that the body’s organs are connected to other body systems. To maintain a healthy mind, we must take care of the whole body, as its systems work best together.
You need to protect the system that keeps you going. How? By making lifestyle choices that help keep our hearts, lungs, brains, livers, kidneys, digestive systems, and immune systems healthy. When you commit to protecting your organs through intentional nutrition and a healthy lifestyle, you are not only improving your own life but also preparing your body to be a source of strength for those around you and for those who will experience the healthiest version of you.
Wellness is not only about treating illness, but also about noticing small warning signs early and making better choices before problems become serious. Simple habits such as drinking enough water, eating balanced meals, moving your body regularly, getting enough sleep, going for health screenings, and speaking to someone when you are struggling emotionally can make a meaningful difference.
