The number of cases of Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) confirmed in South Africa is now 24. Since the first case was confirmed in Wuhan, China, at the end of 2019, the number of confirmed cases has risen to 125 048 patients globally as of 13 March 2020. The Scheme is on high alert and would like members to take note of the information below.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the latest estimated mortality rate is only 3.4% worldwide. While high-risk patients such as the elderly and those with underlying medical conditions are more likely to develop serious illness, about 80% of people recover from the virus without needing special treatment.
What to remember as a Bestmed member
Bestmed would also like to remind members that should they be positively diagnosed with COVID-19, they will be fully covered for diagnostic testing, consultations and treatment regardless of their Scheme option.
Bestmed also covers hospitalisation at 100% Scheme rates if members are tested positive for COVID-19. It is to be noted that pre-authorisation is required for hospitalisation. Members must kindly note that, if they are on a network option, they need to use their designated services providers to be covered. The list of the dedicated network of services providers can be accessed via the online member portal, as well as via the Bestmed app. Members can also contact their regional contact centre for assistance regarding service providers, based on their Scheme option.
A plea is made to all Bestmed members to stay guarded against COVID-19. Follow good hygiene habits, such as washing your hands, avoiding handshakes and disposing of tissues in a closed bin. In order to support members in taking precautionary measures, Bestmed will refund any cash purchases for hand sanitizers from members’ available over-the-counter (OTC) benefits if purchased from a network pharmacies. What should I do if I suspect that I have contracted COVID-19?
Will my Bestmed medical aid option cover my expenses if I contract the virus?
Regardless of your Bestmed benefit option, you will be covered for COVID-19 in the unfortunate event that you, or one of your dependants, tests positive. The Scheme will provide cover for confirmed cases in order to pay for diagnostics as well as treatment in and out of hospital. In the case of a positive diagnosis, the member, their representative or their healthcare provider must notify Bestmed of the member’s diagnosis as soon as possible via telephone on 086 000 2378 or email at email@example.com.
It is important to note that members’ routine consultations with medical practitioners will be covered per normal scheme benefits as per the member’s option.
